How to Early Prepare for the SAT SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips One of the most common times to take the SAT is during junior year of high school (th grade). Is it too early to get started on the SAT preparation if you start before junior year - say freshman year or even middle school? What can you do to help with the SAT during the early years? The SAT is one of the most efficient ways to boost your chances of getting into college. I've said it before but I'll say it again: if you have spent less than 40 hours total studying for the SAT, hour-for-hour, there is NO BETTER WAY to improve your college chances than by SAT studying. Does this mean that it's not efficient to study way ahead of time for the SAT? I believe that is it not. There are a few key reasons I'll outline later, but the main logicis this: By starting to study and think about the SAT earlier, you have so many different options and interventions open to you. The old saying that a stitch in time saves nine holds particular true for the SAT. Say you find out your math score is incredibly weak: if you're a freshman or middle schooler you can actually solidly learn the underlying math content. You have the years to take that algebra class or hard math class to improve your skill. Say you find that your SAT score is strongly limiting your college options - you have so many years to fix that. Without further ado, here are someadvantages to starting early: 1. You know where you stand. Once you prepare for the SAT and take it the first time, you'll know roughly where you stand in the college admissions process. The most important advantage to taking the SAT early is that you'll know whether the SAT is a limiting factor for you in college admissions. If your SAT score is 1510 but your GPA is only 2.5 and you have two extracurriculars, then the SAT is NOT your limiting factor. You'll know that you can relax about the SAT, never worry about it again (just use your first score) and boost the other two as much as you can. Conversely, if your SAT score is 1220 but your GPA is pushing 3.9 and you have clubs up the wazoo, the SAT is a strongly limiting factor. It would be well worth your while to spend over a hundred hours on SAT study in this case. Knowing this early gives you so many advantages. You'll know way beforehand what your balance of effort should be between the SAT and other college admission factors. 2. You don't forget content. I would advise the follow ratio of content versus strategy studying depending on how far ahead of junior year you are. If you are studying junior year, I believe a 60/40 content:strategy ratio is most optimal. At this point you've already built your underlying skills for years, so content studying will have limited returns, while strategies, getting used to the timing, fatigue, and quirks of the test are a great way to get quick points. If you are studying sophomoreyear the ratio is 70/30, freshman year the ratio is 80/20, and in middle school the ratio ought to be 90/10. Why do I recommend a higher content:strategy ratio the earlier you study? The simple reason is twofold. First you forget content less through time. Once you learn how to solve a system of linear equations, you'll be using that all the time in math class, and often in real life as well. It's like riding a bicycle; you won't forget it. On the other hand, knowing a strategy like "double check at minute 20" will earn you points, but unless you're taking the SAT, you won't repeat it and so you'll forget it much faster. Second, content studying suffers less from decreasing marginal returns: strategy can only take you so far, but content can take you all the way. I would say you'll be just as efficient studying for SAT content junior year as freshman year. Start early, and begin by focusing on content. 3. You get the SAT over with Junior and senior year will already be stressful enough as it is. You'll be applying to a number of colleges, trying to get the highest GPA possible (junior and senior year GPAs matter most), and these will be your prime years to compete in a number of competitions that will be the crown jewel of your college applications. You don't want the stress of uncertain SAT scores to add to that. So study early, and you could get it over with by the time you reach junior and senior year. In fact, this is exactly the strategy I took: I look the test only once and never had to worry about it most of junior and senior year. The book clearly presents the position of men and women as well as sex and the disgrace that comes with it. The author writes these ideas through the eyes of Lurie, where the reader is exposed to his spoken dialogue as well as the unspoken thoughts – which portray his discourse, desire and passions. Even though the novel is written in third person, the language, perceptions and the thoughts of Lurie dominate the narrative, which shows that character development for all others is filtered through that of Lurie. However, exposure to Lurie’s person does not present intimacy; so much as it portrays his isolation. Through the story, Coetzee represents different characters through that of Lurie. For example, he presents the position of all others – through the subjective outlook of Lurie. On a Terrorist Group - Research Paper Example The â€Å"Al Qaeda† was formed in Afghanistan in 1989 to fight the members of the Soviet Union in that country. During that time, the Soviet Union wanted to suppress a budding Islamic Revolution. Thus, the founders of Al Qaeda wished to counter this oppression under the common banner of Islam. A huge number of Arab Afghans travelled from all parts of the Arab world to participate in this â€Å"jihad† and enrolled at the recruitment camp of the organization at Peshawar, situated at the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden and Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri arrived at Peshawar and took over the leadership of the group. During the beginning the organization functioned as a hierarchical structure to facilitate its participation in the war against the Soviets. This arrangement helped the group to send military troops and war aids to Afghanistan and gradually prepared the organization to launch a concerted attack on the countries of the Western world. Thus, during the e arly years of its formation, the Al Qaeda was a highly structured and systematically arranged organization. After the Soviet troops were defeated in Afghanistan, the group changed its structure into a network organization. (Mishal, Rosenthal, 2005, p 3) The Al Qaeda can be classified as an international political terrorist organization. In the opinion of Mishal and Rosenthal (2005), the organization followed a hierarchical order in the beginning and later changed into a network organization. After the attack on Afghanistan in 2001, it assumed the form of a Dune organization. During the time, when the Al Qaeda was engaged in a war with the Soviets in Afghanistan, the group was a hierarchical organization. It was divided into small units which were arranged like pyramids under the group’s common leadership. After its transformation into a network-based organization, the structures within the group were redefined. Al Qaeda became more of a transnational organization which was willing to direct its activities towards multiple causes. During the period 1998 – September 2001, the terrorist group operated as a network organization. (Mishal, Rosenthal, 2005, p 2) Objectives The Al Qaeda was initially formed to counter the Sovi et Union’s attack on the growing Islamic revolution in Afghanistan. After the defeat of the Soviet troops, the group became a transnational organization which was engaged in pursuing a number of causes as its objectives. Book Review – Westward Expansion 1807 - 1880 THESIS: After the War of 1812 much of America's attention turned to exploration and settlement of its territory to the West, which had been greatly enlarged by the Louisiana Purchase. SUMMARY: Families of pioneers swept westward and founded new communities throughout what is now the Midwest, and between 1816 and 1821, six new states were admitted to the Union. HR Generalists vs. Specialist Essay

Working in construction teaches you a good deal of generalist versus specialist management. It is often understood that general managers are what hold the projects together; however, the specialists are who get the job done. Similar to this functionality, human resource management also struggles to decipher the value of both types of managers. Whether it is in construction, accounting, finance, business administration, health care, law, etc., there are always individuals who obtain knowledge on different levels. Having less knowledge of a particular specialty doesn’t make them less valuable. In my professional opinion, I believe the value of a generalist and a specialist are more often based on the volume of the project or organization. Timothy Bartram and his fellow colleagues discuss these relationships in their article titled â€Å"Editors’ Note: Specialist Versus Generalist Managerial Roles in HRM.† Bartram collects a few articles by various authors to convey what happens in the corporate world between these positions. From my understanding, the authors of this article are advocating for the HR specialists of the world. They find that the specialists often get bullied by the general managers because of their perfectionism. According to the authors, human resource generalists focus more on the rate of productions while HR specialists focus on protecting the organization from legal liability (Bartram, 2013). Since in most case, the specialists report to the general manager, it is common for the general manager to feel superior; however, Bartram and his colleagues beg to differ. Although they seem to be the voice of the HR specialists, they are in no way undermining the work of HR generalists. In the second article I read the authors Steven J. Cesare and Coleen Thornton discuss the importance of both managerial positions and their responsibilities. Though they may not have intended to, they’re article seems to suggest that generalists are more anxious to climb the corporate ladder while specialists work to achieve their own goal and recognition from their peer specialists. This is an interesting argument and relatively true in many cases. I, also, have come to learn that generalists more often seek the approval and applause of their superior while specialists are more interested in being innovative and furthering their knowledge. Cesare and Thornton mention how individuals evaluate themselves as either position according to their education versus their profession. For example, if an individual obtains a degree in  engineering and works as a project manager, they consider themselves an engineer which is the specialty while a project manager is more general. Vice versa, people also identify themselves as their profession over their academic degree.

The Writing Process, By Anne Lamott, And Write Before...

The Writing Process After examining â€Å"Shitty First Drafts†, by Anne Lamott, and â€Å"Write before Writing†, by Donald M. Murray, each writing process has some good prospects. Anne Lamott is a little crazy, but passionate writer that can really surprize you. In Anne Lamott s article â€Å"Shitty First Drafts†, she believes that any writer should write a shitty first draft, and that’s how anyone ends up with a better second draft and a â€Å"terrific third draft† .Lamott declares in order to be good, the writer needs to first allow for the words and ideas to come flowing out without restriction. Donald M. Murray, an English Professor, that has a different writing process, wrote an article â€Å" Write before Writing† . He explains, Students who are not†¦show more content†¦It’s saying you will have time to reread and use the information that pops out to you, and makes sense to keep in your essay, and discover some writing you never knew you had. â€Å" I’d start writing without reining myself in†¦.It was almost just typing, just making my fingers move. And the writing would be terrible.†(Lamott 2) There is no boundaries in your writing , so Lamott is saying to let all your craziness out on that paper. Students don’t always know what they are going to write about right away while writing an article or essay, some people just need to give it time. Donald M. Murray claims in his article in â€Å"Write Before Writing†, students should be told of the importance of prewriting. To do so students have to understand the write before writing.
